Buying meat through marketplaces is hazardous to health

The sale of meat and meat products through marketplaces poses a significant threat to consumer health. Aidar Sarsenbaev, head of the veterinary and sanitary laboratory of VetlabKZ LLP, told the World of NAN editors about this.

Today there are many online platforms for selling various products. These platforms are user-friendly and easy to use, making it easy for livestock owners to advertise their meat for sale.

“However, this violates the legislation on door-to-door slaughter, since veterinary and sanitary standards are not observed, the condition of the animal and veterinary diagnostic measures are not checked,” explained Aidar Sarsenbaev.

According to him, buying meat on marketplaces involves the risk of purchasing products that have not passed veterinary control. Such meat can be a source of dangerous infectious diseases, such as brucellosis and anthrax, as well as parasitic diseases, such as echinococcosis and trichinosis.

“Buyers often do not know the origin of meat, the conditions of its preparation and storage. For example, ground beef can contain not only beef, but also poultry or pork, since these types of meat are cheaper. Also, minced meat can be prepared from animals forced to be slaughtered in a dying state, or animals treated with antibiotics,” the expert added.

Sellers of meat products on marketplaces may not comply with hygienic and veterinary and sanitary requirements. Pathogens of intestinal infections multiply quickly in meat products, and residual amounts of veterinary drugs used in the treatment of animals can negatively affect the human body.

“The choice of meat and meat products requires a serious approach, since the health of you and your loved ones depends on it. Buy meat at specialized retail outlets where mandatory veterinary and sanitary examinations are carried out: in markets, shops, shopping centers and fairs. Make sure you have veterinary documents confirming the safety and quality of the products before purchasing,” recommends Aidar Sarsenbaev.
