Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Khisemidulli Ukbayev is trying to revive the population of the Karakul sheep breed in Kazakhstan.
Unfortunately, after the collapse of the USSR in Kazakhstan, Karakul sheep breeding has fallen into decline. In the 90s, the level of livestock reached 6.2 million heads, with an annual production of 2-2.5 million hides. Now one can only dream of such figures. During the long years of independence, farmers were not able to restore the former livestock. And the state is in no hurry to develop advanced processing of skins.

Kh. Ukbayev devoted a lot of time and effort to the improvement of the Karakul breed. Under his leadership, the Guryevskiy type of grey karakul sheep with blue coloring, the Kazakh intra-breed sheep with sur colors, the Bairkum factory type of Bukhara sur with silver coloring and the Syr Darya factory type of grey karakul sheep with blue coloring were created in Atyrau region. According to the scientist, the demand for this breed in the world remains high.
"We were in Essentuk, so there are seven sewing factories working there. But there are no karakul sheep in the region. If you go to a factory, choose a color of karakul, they will sew it for you. Factories buy pelts in Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, at various fur auctions. And the products are in good demand. People come from all over Russia and the far abroad for the factories' products. Incidentally, from Kazakhstan too. We too could sell our furs," added the wife of Academician Rabiga Darusheva.
There are many new breeds being bred by Karakul breeders all over the world. One is more amazing than another, with unique colors: gold, platinum, pink, and even turquoise. The most expensive is considered sur - it is an uneven distribution of pigment along the length of the hair, it is this color that has the greatest variety of shades.
"We are trying to find businessmen who would be interested in this. But personally, I believe that this industry should be supported by the state. We need a plant for dressing pelts. There should also be support at the state level for farms which are engaged in reproduction of karakul breeds. The work should be centralized: specialists travel to the field, select sheep and take them to the workshop. Accordingly, farmers are paid accordingly. Of course, there should also be pastures. I am sure that this sector can be restored, and it will bring a good income to the state. You can't rely only on oil all the time," Kh. Ukbayev shared his opinion.
