A senator called for the creation of a law on soil conservation

A recent agrochemical study by the Uspanov Kazakh Research Institute of Soil Science and Agrochemistry found that soils with low humus content on non-irrigated land are 63% and 98% on irrigated land, reports World of NAN.

"Unfortunately, in recent years, very little attention has been paid to soil science in Kazakhstan. So far, the definition of soil and the state of its fertility are not regulated in any way in the republic, unlike in Russia, Uzbekistan, EU countries, the US and Canada," Senator Zakirzhan Kuziyev wrote in his request.

In Kazakhstan, the weighted average humus content in soils has fallen to 0.5-1.5%, while the optimal content is 3.5-5%. It takes at least 50 years to raise the humus content.

"In this regard, there is a need to develop a law on soil protection, as well as the adoption of a long-term state scientific-targeted program with large-scale monitoring studies of soil cover, with the creation of a modern soil information system for operational and targeted management of soil resources," the deputy concluded.
