Agriculture accounts for 9.1% of all greenhouse gas emissions in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan reaffirmed its commitment to fight climate change in the framework of the UN summit COP26 which was held on November 1. First Vice-Minister of Agriculture Aidarbek Saparov among other speakers reported about the work on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions at the meeting of the government, the World of NAN reports referring to the press service of the Prime Minister.

"To date, agriculture accounts for 9.1% of all greenhouse gas emissions, of which the share of animal husbandry is 62%. The main factor in mitigating these risks is the "green" technology and sustainable production, including the effective management of resources, "- said the Vice-Minister.

Thus, according to Saparov, in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the framework of the National Agricultural Complex Project and the project of the Concept of Agricultural Complex Development until 2030, the investment subsidies of 25% of the cost of equipment for processing manure and poultry manure in livestock production is implemented to reduce methane emissions. In crop production, the diversification of crop areas will be continued in order to reduce the area of water-intensive crops. Measures are also taken to introduce modern digital technologies, use the results of space monitoring and remote sensing of lands. In order to comply with agricultural technologies support is provided for the purchase of modern varieties of seeds and planting material, as well as fertilizers and biological plant protection agents. At the same time, within the framework of the Concept of development of agro-industrial complex reimbursement of expenses of agricultural producers for purchase of organic fertilizers will be provided. Large-scale implementation of programs to subsidize the purchase of agricultural machinery, preferential leasing, as well as the development of domestic agricultural machinery will be continued for technical equipment of the industry.

The Vice-Minister also noted that measures are taken to develop irrigated agriculture through introduction of water-saving technologies, as well as improvement of material and technical base of irrigation and drainage services and expansion of their activity area. At the same time, investment subsidies of up to 50% of the cost of purchasing modern irrigation systems are provided.

According to A.Saparov, currently the country already has a number of successful examples of agricultural producers, who use installations for processing of livestock waste. These are 9 poultry farms, 7 pig farms, 8 dairy farms.

"At the same time, due to state support measures by 2030, the number of poultry farms that use waste recycling facilities will increase to 20 units, pork farms to 15, and dairy farms to 40," the speaker said.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, farmers are showing interest in using renewable energy sources. According to regional akimats, more than 7,618 farms use solar panels and 33 use wind-powered generators. At the same time, through the implementation of investment subsidy measures by 2030, it is planned to increase the number of farms using solar panels to 27,000 units, and the number of wind generators to 50.

Application of renewable energy sources not only creates infrastructure for pasture watering and provides water to farms, but by saving fuel and electricity, it also saves financial resources of agricultural producers.

At the same time, the World Bank's Program for Sustainable Livestock Development has been launched, which implies the application of green growth principles in the beef livestock sector. The program implies the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the production of beef, including emissions from such sources as: intestinal fermentation, manure removal, storage and use, and feed production.
