Japan donated drought forecasting equipment to Kazhydromet

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Japanese Government have officially handed over computing equipment that will be built into the national drought forecasting and prevention system of Kazhydromet RSE, World of NAN reports referring to the Hydrometeorological Service.

The new equipment is an addition to the existing one and will allow prompt formation of forecasts about the onset of drought to inform regional authorities and farms.

"In Kazakhstan, along with mitigation, it is important to work on climate change adaptation projects in order to prepare the infrastructure and economy for extreme weather events as a consequence of climate change. UNDP in Kazakhstan, together with its development partners, will continue to provide systematic support to the Government of the country in implementing measures for sustainable agriculture," said Sukhrob Khojimatov, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative in Kazakhstan.

According to Danara Alimbayeva, Director General of RSE Kazhydromet, agriculture is a climate-dependent sector of the economy, so in the conditions of climate change and economic instability, agrometeorological services to agricultural enterprises in the region deserve special attention.
