Frosts have damaged future crops in Russia

Snowfalls and cold snaps in May caused the greatest damage in the southern and central regions of the neighboring country, since the growing season had already started there, World of NAN reports.

In a number of constituent entities of the Russian Federation, including the Rostov region, damage to agricultural crops and fruit and berry plantings was recorded due to frosts that occurred in early May (the temperature at night in different parts of the region ranged from 0 to -10°C).

Winter cereal crops tolerate frosts more easily, but in April there was an increased temperature regime, which contributed to the rapid growth of plants and the growth of leaf mass. As a result, the amount of sugars that protect plants from damage due to exposure to negative temperatures decreased, and the amount of liquid in plant cells increased.

Spring cereal crops are also vulnerable to low temperatures during the period from germination to tillering. By the time frosts arrived, there were already shoots in the early sowing fields. Early-sowing industrial crops (sunflower, corn) and leguminous crops were also damaged by frost.

A state of emergency has been declared in several regions of the neighboring country. It is not yet known how many crops were affected. However, according to experts, gardeners and vegetable growers will suffer the greatest damage.
