A Spanish company has managed to revolutionize the onion segment by developing the first variety of onion on the market that does not cause tears. This is a true variety-level innovation for one of the world's most grown vegetables, reports World of NAN, citing nunhems.com.
"The new variety is the result of more than three decades of deliberate research work by our selectors, the result of various crosses carried out using traditional methods," said Francisco de la Cruz, manager of onion operations at the producing company.
Named Sunions, the new onion is a variety of long-day yellow onions whose ripening period begins in July and the harvest ends in September. The new variety is successfully grown in several regions of Spain. The product has been on the market for about a year and is already available in various Spanish supermarkets. Soon it will arrive in other European supermarkets.
Surprisingly, while other varieties become spicier over time when stored, the Spanish onion takes on a sweet taste. According to the growers, the product is left in storage for a certain amount of time before it is sold so that its characteristics become perfect.
"We are very pleased with the feedback we are getting from consumers. Our product is versatile, as it can be eaten both raw and cooked, and it leaves no one indifferent. To guarantee a positive eating experience, we've run several tests. You won't have tears when slicing, and you'll enjoy a really sweet-tasting onion," the company says.
According to the growers, the new variety has been grown on nearly 5.5 million hectares since its creation. As a result, about 104.5 million tons of onions have been harvested.
