Tokayev: EAEU countries can feed 600 million people

The President of Kazakhstan took part in the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, where he raised the issue of joint development of agriculture, reports World of NAN with reference to Akorda.

According to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, today the countries of the "Eurasian five" have managed to achieve a high level of food self-sufficiency.

"At the same time, the share of agricultural exports of the EAEU countries in the world market is still extremely low, amounting to just over two percent. And this is at a time when more than 800 million people on the planet are experiencing hunger and food shortages. Food supplies are unfortunately hampered by the current geopolitical situation, where sanctions have taken center stage," Tokayev said.

As a result, peoples in need of food are suffering. Meanwhile, experts estimate that the potential of the EAEU countries will be able to feed about 600 million people.

"Therefore, establishing close cooperation ties to produce competitive, environmentally friendly and export-oriented products that meet advanced international standards should become one of our priority tasks," the president stated.

He suggested joint efforts to develop agro-logistics and storage systems, to introduce digital solutions in agriculture. The countries should work on the creation of joint agro-innovation centers, which would be engaged in commercialization and industrial implementation of new technologies in the agro-industrial complex.
